Tuesday Night...Still Driving

We stopped at an old plantation where we got to see a 3-centuries-old Southern mansion, complete with period furnishings (some original). This mansion was built on the Mississippi River and during its high point had 1200 acres of various crops. Over 100 slaves lived and worked here, and it was quite interesting to see the original owner's "inventory" of his slaves, complete with their age, brief description and their worth in dollars. Since the plantation is on the river, and since the terrain there is marshy and muggy, it was the perfect breeding ground for mosquitos, and these weren't the little mosquitos we see in Portland. We got eaten up during our tour. I kept wondering how people dealt with it back then.

We had a bite to eat there, all of which is interesting to note. Elijah out of nowhere decided to order fried catfish. Samuel played it safe with a grilled cheese sandwhich. We also ordered Jambalaya, cajun fries, a po' boy and pecan praline cheesecake.

Now we're on the road, and we've put Mississippi and Alabama behind us, which means...yes, we're in Florida! The boys are all in bed asleep and Jax Beach is about 3 more hours away, so we're debating about whether to push it and get there tonight. Now is a time when it would be so wonderful to see a 24-hour Starbucks!

As a sidenote, we heard that you all back home are getting some rain. We started to get some drops a few nights ago in Austin, but nothing came of it. Besides that, its been weeks since we've seen any liquid sunshine. I really like the weather we've seen, but Adam wouldn't mind seeing some rain.

QUOTES OF THE DAY:

"Mom, calm down!" - Elijah

"Yes! We're in Florida! I can't wait to get to the beach!" - Samuel, as we crossed the border (still 450 miles away).

miles traveled today: 600
