A Look Into Our Day...Driving Through Lousiana

If you could see us now...
This is a picture of our day today, which just struck me as being completely and thoroughly "Southern."

We started the morning with breakfast at Cracker Barrel (if you've spent any time at all down South, you know about Cracker Barrel - it's down home country cookin' at its finest), where we ordered such things as "Old Timer's Breakfast" and "Poor Boy's Breakfast." We got to sample grits, biscuits, gravy and fried apples.

Now we've donned our cowboy hats and we're driving on an eastbound Louisiana highway that is built over a huge swamp. Looking down we see a vast expanse of greenish-brown murky water with dramatic live oaks growing out of the swamp, draped with Spanish moss. The ipod is blaring our current favorite in bluegrass, Old Crow Medicine Show (compliments of Charley)(FYI, at the moment it's "Wagon Wheel"). We're passing exits such as "Grosse Tete" and "Atchafalaya." We just drove by a commercial truck that said, no joke, "Lard Oil Company."

I can't wait to see what New Orleans is like. I have such a curiosity about this place and its unique culture. I think it began with a love for learning French as a high schooler. We'll keep this updated as we go.
